OBSERVABILITY OF BAOUENDI–GRUSHIN-TYPE EQUATIONS THROUGH RESOLVENT ESTIMATES

Abstract In this article, we study the observability (or equivalently, controllability) of some subelliptic evolution equations depending on their step. This sheds light speed propagation these equations, notably in ‘degenerated directions’ structure. First, for any $\gamma \geq 1$ , establish a resolvent estimate Baouendi–Grushin-type operator $\Delta _{\gamma }=\partial _x^2+\left \lvert x\right \rvert ^{2\gamma }\partial _y^2$ which has step +1$ . We then derive consequences Schrödinger-type equation $i\partial _tu-\left (-\Delta }\right )^{s}u=0$ where $s\in \mathbb N$ identify three different cases: value ratio $(\gamma +1)/s$ may hold arbitrarily small time or only sufficiently large times even fail time. We present a simple proof of the resolvent estimates of elliptic Fourier multipliers on the Euclidean space, and apply them to the analysis of time-global and spatially-local smoothing estimates of a class of dispersive equations. We discuss recent progress in understanding the effects of certain trapping geometries on cut-off resolvent estimates, and thus on the qualititative behavior of linear evolution equations. We focus on trapping that is unstable, so that strong resolvent estimates hold on the real axis, and large resonance-free regions can be shown to exist beyond it.
